Prerak

PRERAK was established in 1988 by a few intellectual and experienced community volunteers. Their mandate was to promote the social, economic, political, educational and cultural life of the under privileged and marginalized sections of the society. The method was to empower these communities and provide them with the required skills and capacity to fight against any social injustice. Innovative strategies were thought of to create awareness in communities about their fundamental rights and duties, and to help them utilize their rights to live with dignity, including women’s empowerment and gender sensitization.

The organisation was registered under Madhya Pradesh Society Registration Act 1873, Foreign Contribution Regulatory Act (FCRA) under the Ministry of Home Affairs of the government, the PWD Act under the department of Panchayat and Social Welfare, 12A and 80G Income Tax Act under Government of India, Ministry of Finance.

PRERAK works in 10 districts of Chhattisgarh with its administrative office in Rajim. The districts are Bilaspur, Mungeli, Gaurella, Gariyaband, Kabirdham, Raigarh, Kanker, Mahasamund, Bastar and Dhamtari.

Area of work: PRERAK provides special education, medical and life skill training to children with disabilities at their rehabilitation and vocational training centre for the disabled. It promotes livelihood initiatives, sustainable agriculture & formation of farmers groups. The organization works with NTFPs, organic agriculture,  the collection and promotion of traditional seeds, and conservation of environment and natural resources.

Description of landscape and people: The region consists largely of forested and hilly terrain, as well as the Achanakmar Tiger Reserve in Bilaspur, and the Udanti Sitanandi Tiger Reserve in Gariyaband. Some work is being done with respect to tenure rights in Raigarh district. The work is among various tribal communities, scheduled and other backward castes, such as the Urav, Rathiya, Bhuieya, Kanvar, Gond, Manjhi, Kalanga, Dhanvar, Bhaina, Bhinjwar, Khadiya, Khairwar, Halba, Durwa, Bhatra, Muriya, Madia, Baiga, Birhor and Kamar. The problems specific to these areas are a lack of awareness of rights, lack of access to government support systems and the frequent occurrence of natural disasters such as cyclones, droughts, etc.
