PRERAK
PRERAK is a rural development organization established in 1989. It is dedicated to
improving the socio-economic, political, and educational conditions of marginalized
communities in Gariyaband district, Chhattisgarh. The organization empowers tribal
communities, women, and people with disabilities by raising awareness of their rights and
promoting self-reliance. PRERAK’s vision is to create a self-sufficient, healthy, and
peaceful rural community, free from exploitation, while its mission is to foster the
empowerment of marginalized groups through access to natural resources, government
schemes, and village-level self-governance.
The organization has implemented several impactful projects, such as the “inclusive
development of children and youngsters with disabilities,” which provided essential
services to 100 children; and “Livelihood Promotion,” which supports tribal farmers with
sustainable farming practices. Additionally, PRERAK manages an Old Age Home for
destitute elderly individuals and promotes sustainable natural resource management by
helping communities claim their forest rights under the Forest Rights Act, 2006. Its
initiatives have significantly improved the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and
established community seed banks to support local agriculture.
Recognized nationally and state-wide, PRERAK has received awards for its work in
rehabilitation of people with disabilities, and education, from the Ministry of Health and
the Government of Chhattisgarh. The organization has built strong networks with partners
for emphasizing gender equality and community-driven development. PRERAK continues
to expand its outreach, developing new projects to further its mission of holistic rural
development.
