The Rationale of the Sal Leaf desk

Until 2005 Sal leaf business was next to agriculture sector which provides employment and income to such a large number of populations in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. It is often said that, sal leaf is an insurance against starvation, migration and social unrest. Unfortunately adequate attention has not been given to this business as a result after so many years the primary collectors are not capable of earning equivalent to the minimum wage rate fixed per day by the govt. Policy deficiency to encourage eco friendly sal leaf trade making the business vulnerable. The products are facing tough competition from paper and plastic products. Sal leaf business is declining despite its tremendous environmental contribution to keep our cities clean along with addressing the livelihood of millions of people.
